The new year of 2023 has begun, in promising fashion, on a Sunday that began dreary and grey but which gave way to sunshine and temps that topped 60°F by mid-afternoon. That was prime for an extended walk downtown, clocking in at over 5 miles, relishing the feeling of warmth following our bitter Christmas cold spell. Even better was the happy quiet start to that day, when Sumner could not wait to get back to the third floor where waited his new baby, a kind gift from Amy and Gern.
On Monday morning, the last of the holiday guests departed and the new-found stillness of the house was bittersweet, of course. An ill-advised but indulgent morning snack of two of the leftover Hawaiian rolls left me marveling at my enduring weakness in the face of temptation, but also at how remarkable those rolls still were. I'm a bit pleased with myself. When fuller hunger struck later in the day, I fell back on an easy favorite: skillet beef stroganoff.
