The birthday gathering on Monday a week ago would have felt incomplete without a layer cake to finish out the excellent evening. Although the birthday girl has a known love affair with confetti cakes, I had to revert back to a favorite stand-by: vanilla birthday cake with an old-fashioned vanilla buttercream icing. It's a tidy two-layer 8-incher, so the slices are not quite as overwhelming...but I still frost with a heavy hand, because: sugar.
