Meal No. 3005: New Year's Day Meatballs

It's a fine tradition, traced back to my sister Allison, for us to enjoy a menu on January 1st comprised of what we call New Year's Day Meatballs, along with company mashed potatoes and (on this occasion) roasted garlicked French green beans. That dinner was absolutely amazing this past Saturday night, with awesome flavor and marvelously satisfying results.

Although it was a partly cloudy day, it was breezy and remarkably warm for the first day of January. We hit a high of 76°F, officially, although our temp gauge at the house nudged up to 77°F. Sumner and I took full advantage of the gorgeous rarity of that day in order to get in a 6-mile walk. He kept me going at a pretty good clip, too: we averaged just over 14 minutes a mile.

The photo above is from the Salem Strollway across from Old Salem, and the photo below was taken as we crossed the new Strollway pedestrian bridge of Salem Parkway, approaching the downtown central business district and two former bank headquarters builings: BB&T (the green-glass tower) and Wachovia (the taller leaning-perspective phallus palace).

"New Year's Day Meatballs," from Carol Fultz and shared with me by my sister Allison Jones Holden of Rossville, IN (2001).

"Company Mashed Potatoes," a Jones family favorite.
