As we reached the end of the week before Christmas, the weather finally moderated; that Saturday was gloriously sunny with fully blue skies and yet still was marred by some sharp cold breezes. (Sumner enjoyed that morning, as the photo at the bottom shows.) I'd already put into motion my plan for that night's meal, though, thanks to a loaf of homemade peasant bread in anticipation of grilled cheese sandwiches, the perfect accompaniment to steaming bowls of delicious cream of tomato soup.
It was the mid-day meal that Saturday and couldn't have been better timed. Partial atonement came from a brisk walk of nearly four-and-a-half miles in the final hour of daylight. Then: a honking huge slice of remaining chocolate meringue pie!
