There are many things to love about living downtown, and there are trade-offs as well, as one might expect. One of those trade-offs (which I generally do not mind) is the occasional closing of the street in front of my house for some special event. Today's example of that was the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which was headquartered or based down at Salem College (an easy 15 minute walk from the house). The 5K race route brought it down Spring Street after people turned from Fourth Street just up from the house.
Of course, what I do not understand is why there is very little effort to inform the residents of the neighborhood when the streets will be closed. For instance, about a year ago, I had a big shindig scheduled for here at the house one Sunday evening (and I guess around 30 people came to it) but, without any notice or warning, the streets were closed off for a cycling day. So it leaves me wondering about the approval process and whether there is, or should be, a stipulation that event organizers make a reasonable effort to get the word out that something as disruptive as a street closing will be occurring.
