Snow Is On The March

Let's see...we'll just tool over here to the calendar and see how close to spring we are...managed to escape the worst of winter this year...only traces of snow a couple of times, really...now that it's March we should be--

GREAT SCOTT. We're getting a big enough snowfall here in the Northwest Piedmont of North Carolina that it can be truly called an event!

And, it turns out there must be a little issue with the flashing around the new fireplace chimney, because there's wetness snaking its way down the front of it and also a bit from the side:

What happened is we got snow before Pete and the guys had gotten around to putting up the counter-flashing around the chimney at the roof line. So it won't be a problem in future and is only occurring because of this strangely-timed snowfall.

UPDATE: There was either too much hope in future events, or indulgent confidence in the handling of the issue, because the chimney leaked in a similar fashion in June, November, and December, 2009 (addendum by RCJ on 01-02-10).

Monday Morning Update: The sound of many friends rings in my ear, who kept insisting (I thought foolishly) that our big snows always come in March. Who knew? Who remembered? I'll just enjoy it.

It's cold and still windy out, and the forecast says we'll not be getting above freezing today. It's a nice bright sunshine now and really beautiful, even though it's only a few inches of snow. Pete and the guys are not here today, which is smart...no need to be on the roads, which are treacherous. And there's sledding with kids to be done whilst they can!

By the way, after enjoying snowcream last night, it was a well-timed suggestion from a colleague in Virginia to consider adding a little Bailey's to the next batch.
