“Babyface,” the latest student production from the UNC School of the Arts School of Filmmaking to opt for the Roediger House as a location, took over the downstairs on the Saturday night of Labor Day Weekend. Written and directed by Shawn Deninger and produced by Sofia Vargas, this very personal and moving story is going to look fantastic on the big screen.
Set exclusively in the dining room for just a few scenes, the entire downstairs was still abuzz with the half-size crew of around 20 film and design and production students, who arrived around 6:30 pm and worked till an 11:30 pm wrap. Let’s not overlook the extra treat that the talent included a returning actor, our new friend Jon, who’d played such a key role in last winter’s production of “Beaks Bloody” (also filmed in the dining room!).
These emerging filmmakers from UNCSA bring such excellent energy (for a few it seems bolstered, oh, perhaps by Red Bull!) and they work diligently and collegially. I do believe our downtown abode lends itself well for a variety of reasons, and I do hope that the open arms with which we try to greet them makes it all an easier endeavor to pull off.
UNCSA is an amazing institution and it produces incredibly talented and capable creators and craftspeople. It is an awesome privilege to get this favorable near-view of the process.
